]]> Whenever anyone talks about enterprise computing, the discussion typically shifts to Microsoft and Windows. After all, the software giant’s operating system has long been the dominant force in the corporate world. And, aside from Windows Vista, each new version of the software has proven to be extremely successful on a corporate level. When Apple products get discussed in the enterprise at all, the conversation usually centers around the popular iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet, not the relatively prosaic Mac desktops and notebooks. However, a new study from the Enterprise Desktop Alliance could drastically change the conversation. The organization recently released results from a survey showing that, while the Mac’s share of enterprise computing remains very small, there has been a dramatic rise in business deployments since 2009. (Despite the organization’s name, the study looks at desktop and notebook computers). Some 460 IT administrators from business and government organizations with hundreds of system disclosed their expectations in an online survey conducted in May and June 2010. Respondents represent a total of 3.2 million computers in 2009, growing to 3.5 million in 2011. The median respondent had 400 desktops and 200 laptops in their organization in 2010.  (By Don Reisinger on 10-27-2010)

]]> eGroup’s Daniel Navarro, Inside Sales, took on Guiseppe’s hot chicken wing eating challenge last night in Mt. Pleasant, SC–and lived to tell his story.

The rules: Daniel had to eat 7 chicken wings, smothered in a sauce that uses the infamous “bhut jolokia” pepper, in 10 minutes. (The bhut jolokia-also known variously by other names in its native region- is a chili pepper generally recognized as the hottest in the world. The pepper is often called the ghost chili by Western media.) With only a small cocktail napkin to attempt to wipe the fiery sauce from his face and hands during the feat, and nothing to drink, he then had to sit for an additional 5 minutes after consuming the wings to endure the pain before the wait staff could come to his rescue with milk and cold rags.

Below is Daniel’s first hand account of this heroic feat:

“First off, it was all about the mind set! I downed one glass of milk, and then it was game on. The manager came up to ask “so, who is the idiot?”, but I didn’t let his mockery rattle me. I was in the zone. I had to sign a waver in order to enter into the contest. Right before I started eating the wings I took a moment to get myself  mentally prepared. When I started, I literally ate the wings so fast I didn’t have time to think about how hot these wings really were. One thing I noticed besides the fact that I was sweating heavily was that my hands were shaking like crazy. It took me 2 ½ minutes to eat 7 wings. After that the five minute waiting period, called the AFTER BURN, began. Man, did it BURN! I told the crew of eGroup onlookers “do whatever you want–take pictures, whatever–just please don’t talk to me.”  I needed to be in peace, and breathing was key. The last 2 minutes my eyes started to burn so badly I couldn’t even open then without being in pain. I almost thought I wasn’t going to make it, but when I hit the 1 minute mark I knew I had this one in the bag. 10.9.8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1 Mission complete! I started chugging milk and received a cold rag to clean myself up. My face and lips were burning so badly I had to ask for a second cold rag to just lay on my face. That’s all I got.”

Daniel’s eagerness to take on even the most extreme of challenges translates to his “get it done” attitude as an Inside Sales Executive with eGroup.

About the USMC Mud Run

Every year in September the Greater Columbia Marine Foundation hosts the largest Mud Run in the Southeast. The race attracts thousands of people from all over the Southeast and beyond. The Ultimate Challenge Mud Run is over 4.2 miles, and has 30 obstacles that have to be crossed by each team requiring team work and a lot of determination. The 4.2 mile course is an all-terrain race conducted on dirt roads, improved and unimproved trails through the training area. These trails include mud holes, walls, trenches and other obstacles that require swimming, crawling, climbing and jumping. Some people come to compete, but many come just to complete!

Last year there were over 1800 teams competing, which well exceeded the attendance from 2008 (1200 teams in 2008). Also, the 2009 event was a huge success because of the many groups who came together to support and welcome home our Marines.

Charleston Digital Corridor

Charleston, SC – March 18, 2010 – Register before April 1st for the Charleston Digital Corridor’s iFive:k, and capitalize on the early registration fee of $25. The i5k will be held on Thursday, April 22nd at 6:30pm. iFive:k participants will run/walk/shuffle through historic downtown Charleston and enjoy the post-race celebration at the Maritime Center with live entertainment from the PeopleMatter Band!

Want to get off to a running start? Charleston Digital Corridor member eGroup, is hosting a series of three Wellness Runs leading up to race day. At the first Wellness Run, held March 10th, an eager group of i5k registrants had the opportunity to train with last year’s overall winner, Karl Walsh. The Wellness Runs offer participants the chance to run together through scenic downtown and a post-run “cool-down” while Mr. Walsh discusses training techniques.

“The Wellness Runs are a natural extension of the City of Charleston’s effort to support and promote a healthy community,” said Kimberly Taylor, Program Manager for the City of Charleston’s Digital Corridor and i5k Race Director. “As a lead sponsor of the i5k, the City encourages employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” she added. Future Wellness Runs will be held on Wednesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 14th at 6pm, starting at the Flagship, 475A East Bay Street. This event is free, but participation is limited to 15 iFive:k registrants. Contact Kimberly Taylor for more details.

The i5k also features a team component! Enter in teams of two, six or ten and compete to have your company/team name on the iFive:k’s “Bragging Rights” Trophy housed at the Digital Corridor’s headquarters. Gather some friends and/or colleagues and challenge the 2009 Champions in the three categories: TrySports – “Double Duo;” Wharf Rats – “Six Pack;” and Seamon Whiteside & Associates – “Top Ten.”

The Charleston Digital Corridor will donate a portion of the proceeds raised to the Burke Scholarship Fund. This donation will be earmarked for a student seeking higher education in a technology related field.
