Citrix Licensing Is Changing: What You Must Do Before April 2026

Mike Dent

Field CTO - Hybrid Data Center

Citrix is retiring traditional on-premises licensing in favor of the License Activation Service (LAS), with a firm deadline of April 15, 2026. Organizations running on-prem Citrix components must act now to avoid support risk and ensure licensing compliance.

Citrix is transitioning all on-premises licensing to the new License Activation Service (LAS), with a hard deadline of April 15, 2026. After this date, support will only be available for LAS-compliant deployments, making this a critical milestone for any organization running on-premises Citrix infrastructure.

What is the License Activation Service?

LAS is Citrix’s modern, cloud-based licensing solution that replaces traditional license file management. Instead of manually downloading, uploading, and tracking license files, your License Server connects to Citrix Cloud and handles activation automatically.

The new model brings several operational improvements: automated activation for compatible products, seamless license renewals without manual intervention, and elimination of the administrative overhead that’s been part of Citrix licensing for years. Once registered, your License Server communicates regularly with Citrix Cloud to keep activations current and aligned with your contract dates.

What’s in Scope?

This transition affects the full range of on-premises Citrix platform components, including:

  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
  • NetScaler (Console Service, Console on-prem, fixed bandwidth subscriptions)
  • Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS)
  • XenServer
  • Workspace Environment Management
  • XenMobile Server

If your organization is already fully utilizing Citrix Cloud services, no action is required. However, if you’re running any on-premises components, you’ll need to complete the LAS transition before the deadline.

Why Act Now?

The transition involves three key steps: upgrading your License Server (if needed), registering with Citrix Cloud, and activating each product. While the process is manageable, several factors make early planning essential:

Version Requirements
LAS requires License Server build 51000 or higher. If you’re running an older version, you’ll need to upgrade before you can register. Some Citrix products also require specific version levels to support LAS activation.

Network Considerations
Your License Server needs outbound connectivity to Citrix Cloud endpoints. Environments with restrictive firewall policies will need to accommodate this traffic, which may require security review and change approval processes.

Change Control Windows
Most organizations can’t make infrastructure changes on short notice. If your environment has scheduled maintenance windows or CAB approval requirements, you’ll need lead time to get the work scheduled.

Multi-Server Environments
Organizations with multiple License Servers or complex Citrix deployments will need a coordinated approach to ensure nothing is missed.

Risk of Inaction
After April 15, 2026, Citrix will only provide support for LAS-compliant deployments. Running a non-compliant environment means you’ll be without vendor support if issues arise, an unacceptable position for production infrastructure that your users depend on daily.
